Choquequirao

Choquequirao

Nestled deep in the Vilcabamba Range of the Andes, Choquequirao is perhaps the most remote of the surviving ancient Inca ruins in Peru. To access it requires a multi-day trek through the challenging canyon and cloud forest terrain of the high Andes. For this reason, few travelers have made it to this spectacular mountaintop Inca citadel.

If you’re up for the challenge of a four- or five-day trek, the rewards are well worth the effort. Not only will you pass through stunning mountain scenery, but you’ll have the 600-year-old ruin to yourself to explore.

Choquequirao, often referred to as “The Sister City of Machu Picchu”, stretches across 12 sectors and measures three times the size of Machu Picchu. Archaeologists are still excavating the site from its centuries-old jungle grasp and there’s still about 70% of the complex to unearth.

A journey to Choquequirao is as off-the-beaten-trail as you can get on a Peruvian culture vacation. Don’t miss out on a chance to brush shoulders with ancient history away from the crowds. Speak to a Saga Machupicchu  Designer to begin planning your southern Peru vacation and even trek from Choquequirao to Machu Picchu.
